What do you know about contemporary music from this part of the world? Try to sum it up in a sentence - or watch this snippet of the documentary, yallah.underground

A friend was asked if any good music came out this part of the world: and the initial response was SoapKills.
Making music comparable to Portishead in the 90s, the Lebanese have been on their game for a while. In fact, we can vouch for their superiority over many contemporary western bands today (not volunteering names)

MAKE: T'es CHIC?

Well everyone’s doing it.
That is, blogging about MAKE Business Hub and “luvvvving” it.

Attractive reading selection
BCBG ambiance(double frenchjargon)
Excellent coffee (LAVAZZA)
Great service
Feng shui space

Aren’t all of you feeling that twinge of Dubai social peer pressure? ;)
We seem to be getting work done here but at the same time a little bit distracted by all the attractive people walking about, looking so effortlessly cool and occupied.
Isn’t that what we look for in Dubai? A place to perch and scope out fellow creatives?

Is Raizuli going to perch?

On from March 4th to April 15th, acclaimed photojournalist David Burnett’s, ‘Soul Rebel’ exhibition displays a collection of rare photographs of legend, Bob Marley.
Raizuli was there for opening night and had a chance to speak to Mr. Burnett, one-on-one. A lot of the photos were taken between 1976 and 1977 in Kingston as well as the 1977 Exodus tour in Europe.
A mix of iconic images with many previously unpublished photos makes this exhibition a dope thing to check out.

Bad Girls by M.I.A. is tha shit. Actually everything is - we’ll be talking about her more in the next few weeks.
This is the BEST music video we’ve seen in a while. Hands down. The stunts, the Khandora Crew, the party vibe - we dig it ALL.
This is a sick track for two reasons: the lyrics are plain dirty. Along with that tenor-infused voice, we can’t help but feel like bad-asses.
The second, and more important, is that she reminds us of why this is a cool part of the world to live in. The Arab world is going through tough times. The rest of the world only sees this place as dangerous, unfriendly and hostile. Tough times or not, there’s something about the desert that is bloody beautiful - so thanks Romain Gavras!
This goes out to all our GCC and expat brothas and sistas: it’s our homeland!

Birate Boat (Badness)

The play on the endearing P-B phoneme mixup by our Arabic speaking brothas and also an excuse to sound like a douchebag whilst reading out “BIRATE BOAT BARTY”
Bad joke? Whateva.

The Quint party hosted by Deep Crates Cartel was definitley the place we wanted to be on a Friday night! And while that sounds like PR shmooze, we actually mean it. Reggae vibed and phat beats, the evening was awash with deceivingly cheap drinks and good looking, ass-shaking people who weren’t even breaking a sweat after 6 hours.
Life is not so tough when you’re cruising(literally) in DXB, have a double whiskey in hand and are being presided over by the Deep Crates Cartel who always turn the volume up loud enough to stop yourself worrying about that 8am alarm. It was a drum-tight vibe, hella enjoyed it.
Looking forward to the next monthly BBB, Quint!

F.O.R.T.L.O.M

For The Love of Music: The Lyricists
Living in Dubai can be any audiophile’s Sahara. We need our beats, we need them fresh and readily available.
It may not be a stones throw away for most but the FORTLOM event I went to at the Music Room in Bur Dubai was an effort I didn’t mind making.
I saw a great crowd, definitely different from what I’m used to, not just drunkedly grinding to the Top 40 was, to say the least, a refreshing change.
Ambiance was right.
We’re always looking forward to the next showcase of DXB ta-lent.
